Leg Thread Veins

Our long variable pulsed Nd:YAG laser is effective in removing thread veins up to 3mm in diameter. Whilst sclerotherapy remains the "gold-standard" for leg thread vein treatment, laser treatment can clear up vessels left after sclerotherapy, and is also a stand alone treatment for those patients who may not be suitable for sclerotherapy.

How does the Treatment Work?

The Nd:YAG lasers deliver a series of focused energy pulses generating heat for very short periods of time; this energy closes down the thread veins, without perforating them and then the damaged veins are gradually dissolved and removed by the body's immune system over several weeks after treatment.

Some patients can find the treatment slightly uncomfortable, but the heat generated subsides very quickly after treatment and the skin is cooled and protected with a cold cryogen spray during laser treatment.

How Many Laser treatments Will I Need?

Most thread veins respond and are cleared within 1-3 sessions of laser treatment. Treatments are usually 6-8 weeks apart, with the treated area sometimes looking immediately worse before it improves.

What Happens After the Treatment?

If the treated area is a little sore or dry then the application of aloe vera gel may help.

After both laser thread vein removal therapy and sclerotherapy it is quite safe to perform normal daily activities and gentle exercise is encouraged, with the exception of swimming which should be avoided until the skin is completely healed.

We recommend wearing support tights for 7 days after leg vein treatment and this will be discussed at consultation.

Heavy work-outs and weights should be avoided, as the increased blood pressure will put extra pressure on the treated veins and can render the treatment ineffective.

Facial Thread Veins

Sclerotherapy is not suitable for facial telangiectasia (thread veins) and we offer laser treatment only.

The laser treatment is the same as for leg thread veins, using the Nd:YAG laser but the size of the laser beam is much narrower for facial vessels. There is usually very little swelling or bruising after this treatment, but the area may appear flushed.
