How does laser hair removal work?

The light emitted by the laser is absorbed by the melanin (or pigment) in the hair, causing disruption and damage to the hair shaft, the bulb and the bulge of the hair (where stem cells are found). Hair can only be effectively destroyed when it is in the growth stage (anagen stage), and consequently several laser hair removal sessions will be required to complete the treatment.

Because it is the melanin pigment which absorbs the laser energy, darker hair responds best to treatment as it contains more melanin. blonde, white, grey and some red hair does not respond to laser treatment.

Does it Hurt?

Our laser hair removal Birmingham clinic offers treatment that is suitable for most people, even those with the most sensitive skin. Most patients tolerate the treatment very well and describe it as a slight tingling sensation. The laser does not damage the surrounding skin tissues at all, and uses a cryogen spray which cools the skin a split second before the laser beam pulses.

Is my Skin Suitable for Laser Treatment?

We use two different lasers in our laser hair removal Birmingham clinic:

  • a long pulsed Alexandrite laser and
  • a long pulsed Nd:YAG laser

This means patients with any skin type can be treated safely. Some lasers are not suitable for those with darker skin tones and this is why we have two different lasers to enable us to treat all skin colours.

How many treatments will I need?

You will require a course of treatments. The exact number of sessions and the length between sessions will vary, and this will be assessed during your consultation. The average number of treatments required is usually between 4-8
