The Ageing Process

In youth, the cheekbones are high, the chin line is straight and the face has volume. A youthful face is in the shape of an inverted triangle with a wide cheek bone area (zygoma) which comes down to a narrowing at the chin. As one approaches middle age, the inverted triangle begins to change into a pyramid as one gets fuller in the lower face.

The upper face loses volume due to loss of facial fat that normally forms the foundation beneath the skin. Basically the face deflates. Hence with time one observes a gradual descent of the face which leads to the flattening of the cheeks, development of naso-labial folds (lines from nose to the mouth) and jowls.
